Karol Nawrocki Elected President of Poland – A Conservative Turn in 2025

Warsaw, June 2, 2025 — In a result that reshapes the balance of power in Polish politics, Karol Nawrocki has narrowly defeated liberal challenger Rafał Trzaskowski in the second round of Poland’s 2025 presidential election.

With 50.89% of the national vote, Nawrocki becomes the new President of Poland, supported by the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party. Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw and backed by the center-left Civic Coalition, garnered 49.11%, marking one of the closest presidential contests in Polish democratic history.

From Historian to Head of State

A relatively low-profile figure in mainstream politics, Karol Nawrocki previously served as head of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), where he promoted historical memory campaigns focused on Poland’s resistance against totalitarian regimes. His rise to the presidency is emblematic of a return to nationalism and traditional values, after years of centrist governance under Donald Tusk.

In his victory speech, Nawrocki vowed to “defend sovereignty, protect tradition, and lower taxes,” but also surprised many by reaching across the aisle: “I will be a president for all Poles.”

A Divided Government

With a pro-European government in Parliament and a conservative president in the Presidential Palace, political analysts warn of gridlock ahead. Nawrocki’s veto powers may challenge reforms proposed by Prime Minister Tusk, particularly on judiciary, energy transition, and EU policy.

This outcome could also influence Poland’s future stance toward Ukraine, NATO, and EU institutions.
