Barcelona’s goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has undergone successful surgery after completely tearing his right knee patellar tendon, as confirmed by the club on Monday. The 32-year-old German player now faces a long recovery period.
Ter Stegen sustained the injury during Barcelona’s 5-1 win against Villarreal in La Liga’s 6th round. The injury occurred when he jumped for a high ball and landed awkwardly on his right knee, immediately feeling intense pain. He was stretchered off the field.
Barcelona stated, “Ter Stegen underwent successful surgery on his right knee patellar tendon, performed by Dr. Joan Carles Monllau under the supervision of the club’s medical team in a Barcelona hospital. He will not train with the team until he fully recovers.”
This is not the first time Ter Stegen has dealt with knee issues, as he previously had surgeries on the same knee in 2020 and 2021. According to the newspaper “AS”, his recovery is expected to take at least eight months, effectively ending his participation in this season.
