One of the two doctors accused in connection with the death of “Friends” star Matthew Perry has admitted to illegal ketamine trafficking. Dr. Mark Chavez faces up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to the charges. Perry’s death in 2023 was caused by an overdose of this substance.
The Case Against Dr. Mark Chavez
Dr. Chavez confessed to obtaining ketamine through a fraudulent prescription written for another patient, knowing it was intended for Perry. As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, he surrendered his passport and medical license. The deal could lead to a lighter sentence, but Chavez is set to remain free until his sentencing on April 2. His cooperation is expected to help strengthen the case against another doctor, Salvador Plasencia, who is accused of directly supplying Perry with ketamine.
Prosecutors’ Focus
Prosecutors are also targeting a third figure, Jasveen Sangha, allegedly known as the “Ketamine Queen” in Los Angeles. According to the investigation, the ketamine Perry used on the day of his death was supplied by her.
Matthew Perry’s Death
The 54-year-old actor, known for his role as Chandler Bing in the sitcom “Friends,” died in October 2023 in his Pacific Palisades home. An autopsy revealed traces of ketamine in his system. Although sometimes used to treat depression, the levels of the drug found in Perry’s blood were consistent with those used in general anesthesia. The coroner’s report indicated that the overdose likely caused both excessive cardiovascular stimulation and respiratory depression, leading to his tragic death.
This case highlights the risks of drug misuse, even for substances prescribed for medical purposes. The investigation continues as authorities work to hold those responsible accountable.
