In a significant move in Formula One, Red Bull Racing has announced the departure of Mexican driver Sergio Perez after four years with the team. Perez, 34, joined Red Bull in 2021 and played a pivotal role in their success, contributing to two Constructors’ Championship titles and a historic one-two finish in the Drivers’ standings in 2023 alongside four-time world champion teammate Max Verstappen.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expressed gratitude for Perez’s contributions:
“From the moment he joined in 2021, he proved himself to be an extraordinary team player, helping us to two Constructors’ titles and to our first 1-2 finish in the Drivers’ championship. While Checo will not race for the team next season, he will always be an extremely popular team member and a treasured part of our history. Thank you, Checo.”
During his tenure with Red Bull, Perez secured five Grand Prix victories, including a memorable win at the Monaco GP and two triumphs in Azerbaijan. However, his final season saw him finish eighth in the Drivers’ standings, as Red Bull lost their Constructors’ title to McLaren.
Reflecting on his time with the team, Perez said:
“I’m incredibly grateful for the past four years with Oracle Red Bull Racing and for the opportunity to race with such an amazing team. Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience, and I’ll always cherish the successes we achieved together. A big thank you to every person in the team … I wish you all the best for the future. It has also been an honour to race alongside Max as a teammate all these years and to share in our success.”
Looking ahead, Red Bull has yet to confirm their full driver line-up for 2025, stating that announcements will be made in due course. New Zealander Liam Lawson is widely regarded as the frontrunner to take Perez’s seat.
As the Formula One paddock speculates on what’s next for Perez and Red Bull, it’s clear that his time with the team has left a lasting legacy.
