Wojciech Szczęsny, the talented Polish goalkeeper, is set to become the new goalkeeper for FC Barcelona. TVP Sport journalist Hubert Bugaj announced that Szczęsny has signed a contract with the club. According to reports, Szczęsny has also reached an agreement with Juventus regarding a special clause in his previous contract.
Barcelona has been searching for a replacement for their star goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who suffered a serious knee injury in a recent match against Villarreal. Ter Stegen’s injury will keep him out of the game for several months, and Barcelona needed a strong replacement. Their current backup, Inaki Pena, hasn’t shown the top-level quality needed to fill this role.
Initially, Szczęsny wasn’t the favorite to replace Ter Stegen, but things changed quickly. Spanish media outlets, including “Sport” and “Mundo Deportivo,” reported that Barcelona had made Szczęsny their priority. However, before the deal could be finalized, Szczęsny had to resolve the “secret clause” with Juventus, which required him to pay compensation if he joined another top club within a certain time frame.
Now, everything seems to be settled. Szczęsny will undergo medical tests on Thursday, according to Tomasz Włodarczyk from Meczyki.pl, and Piotr Koźmiński from Goal.pl confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Juventus. Famous sports journalist Fabrizio Romano also shared the news of Szczęsny’s move to Barcelona.
Szczęsny himself expressed his respect for Barcelona’s history, calling it one of the best clubs in the world. He acknowledged the difficult situation caused by Ter Stegen’s injury and felt it would be disrespectful not to consider the opportunity to join the club. However, Szczęsny made it clear that he would only accept the offer if he was the first-choice goalkeeper, not a backup.
While Szczęsny is set to join, Inaki Pena will play as Barcelona’s main goalkeeper for now, including their upcoming match against Getafe.
The transfer is expected to be officially completed next week, with Szczęsny becoming a key player for Barcelona.
